Nov 21 Update

My time in Bolivia is coming to an end soon. Therefore at the end of October, I took two weeks holiday to visit a new place in Bolivia, say my first goodbye and spend time with friends in other cities. One of my highlights was visiting the children’s home in Santa Cruz, it was amazing to see all the children, especially all the wee ones. It was cool to hear that hopefully next year the nursery will be reopening. I was also surprised to see that the horses remembered me. However, the best bit of my day there was helping Nicole (an almost teenager) with her math homework for over four hours. Another highlight was visiting Sucre and spending time with one of my Spanish teachers (and now a good friend). It was lovely to meet her family and have the chance to play Catan with them. Sucre is a beautiful city but like all the cities in Bolivia, the people are even more beautiful.

Back in Oruro, the work continues to go well, at Angel Tree we have continued to deliver food, medicine, and schools supplies. However, excitingly, we have also started to have some children in the centre. It has been brilliant to spend more time with them and give them more support. One day Yesica one of the wee girls, who live halfway up a mountain, brought one of her sheep! With Onésimo we have been in the prison twice a week to work with the prisoners one to one and continue with the bible study material. Tragically the 15-year-old daughter of one of my colleagues died recently, please pray for her during this extremely difficult time.

Two weeks ago, we had a prayer week for Prison Fellowship Bolivia. It was great to spend time with and pray for the staff in the two prisons, the young offenders centre and the guys that support the young offenders. It was a bit crazy but well worth the effort.

Church is also going well, and we are pretty much at full capacity at both services which is exciting and chaotic. I have also been going to the young adult’s group at one of my colleagues’ churches. It has been nice to meet some younger Bolivians. Two weeks ago, I also went on a day trip outside the city where there was a reunion of loads of the young adult groups. It was amazing to see this aspect of the Bolivian church and play some football. A week last Sunday I also played wally (a weird Bolivian variant of volleyball) with some guys from another church. It has been great to finally play and hang out with people after such a long time.

A week last Monday I was quite emotional as it struck me that this period of my life is coming to an end and next year will be very different. It is exciting but also sad (in a good way I think) as I pray through what God wants me to do next.

Please pray:

  • For Angel Tree and Onésimo as we approach the end of the year
  • For me, that I can say goodbye well
  • That I will listen carefully to God, as I think through next year and how I come back to Scotland
  • For the political situation in Bolivia

August 21 update from Oruro

A challenge I am dealing with currently is keeping focused on my work and life here in Oruro. As the number of months that I have left here decreases, I am finding it more and more tempting to think, plan and dream ahead. I think that part of this is that I do not feel called here (to Oruro) for the long term. However, I feel I am in the place that God wants me to be right now and want to make the most of the opportunities that I have here while coping with the difficulties.

Recently I have been thinking about Esther and Daniel, how God wanted them to serve him where they were despite the incredible challenges they faced. When the Israelites were in exile, God called them to invest in their new home and serve him to the best of their abilities there. Philip has also been an encouragement to me, after he spoke to the Ethiopian God whisked him off to the next place where he wanted him to be. Therefore, it is encouraging to know that if we listen and trust in God, he will put us to the places where he wants us to be.

Work has been encouraging this month. Angel Tree is back, last Friday we had a meeting with some of the mums which was cool. We are continuing with the home visits, with the hope that maybe in September or October some of the children can start to return to the centre in small groups. I would love to experience that part of the work. I also had the opportunity to lead a workshop on resilience with the team, which was fun and reminded me that I enjoy psychology and can enjoy studying. While with Onésimo we are back in the prisons and slowly getting back into the rhythm of being with the guys in there again.

The church is also back in person which is brilliant, and I am enjoying working with the children. I was also quite unwell two weeks ago and it is a blessing to know that there are people who really care for me here. However, I do regret from time to time that I don’t have the same close friends here that I have in many of the other cities in Bolivia.

Last week I took the opportunity to visit one of my Latin Link colleagues in Sucre before he heads back to England. Sucre is the constitutional capital of Bolivia is incredibly beautiful and chilled. It was also amazing to finally meet one of my incredible Spanish teachers in the flesh. It was really fun just to hang out and explore a new place. I am always so grateful when people take the time to see me, it is something I really value.

I also wanted to say that I should be back in Scotland in January or February depending on how things go.

Please pray:

· That I will fully engage with all the opportunities that I have here in Oruro

· That I continue to trust in God and plan with him

· That the schools will go back, and the children will be able to come back to Angel Tree

· That we will be spared the restrictions that a 4th wave could lead to

· For the prisoners and that we will be able to build relationships with them

Thanks for reading, love, and blessings

June 21 in Oruro

Abajo esta en español

Bolivia is now amid its’ third wave of Covid cases. Hospitals are struggling again and there is a lack of oxygen especially here in Oruro and Cochabamba. The vaccine program has started and people in their forties can now be vaccinated but I think the uptake has been varied across the country. It feels like January and last August again, with every couple of days a new friend or relative of a friend informing me about a new Covid diagnosis and requests for prayer. In Oruro, this has led to new restrictions with a curfew and being unable to leave our houses on Sunday and holidays.

This has meant that my work has changed, with Onésimo (the work with the prisoners) the prison has now been closed for over a month. Therefore, we are writing devotionals (in the office and at home) and delivering them once a week. While with Angel Tree (work with the children of the prisoners) we have still been visiting the children occasionally to support them with their schoolwork, devotionals and with food packages. However, with this project as well we have been limiting the amount of work we do face to face. This week I also have started working with some of the adolescents who have committed crimes and learning more about the restorative justice course they will undertake. I am praying that things will open up again in the next month or so.

The restrictions have also meant that my church has gone completely online. I have found this difficult and really miss getting to know people in person.

I also changed my holidays this week as I had been hoping to go to Cochabamba and spend some time with really close friends. We decided this wasn’t the wisest moment and I am hoping I can go in July. However, it was a disappointment. I am very grateful therefore that I was able to go to La Paz for one night a couple of weekends ago. Where I saw some beautiful friends and I was able to go to my friend’s niece birthday party and celebrate her. This was a real blessing for me and a highlight of this year.

The isolation has been tough in moments, but I am continually trying to dig into my relationship with God and rest in him. I feel God has so much still to teach me in this situation especially about retaining my joy in him throughout every day. The long list of prayer requests has also really helped me keep talking to God during whatever I happen to be doing.

Prayer Points

Please pray for

The Covid situation here
The prisoners especially as they deal with being even more isolated
That I continue to trust in God and seize the opportunities I have here
My health, my stomach hasn’t been great recently

Thanks for taking the time to read this, with love and blessings
Andrew
