Nov 21 Update

My time in Bolivia is coming to an end soon. Therefore at the end of October, I took two weeks holiday to visit a new place in Bolivia, say my first goodbye and spend time with friends in other cities. One of my highlights was visiting the children’s home in Santa Cruz, it was amazing to see all the children, especially all the wee ones. It was cool to hear that hopefully next year the nursery will be reopening. I was also surprised to see that the horses remembered me. However, the best bit of my day there was helping Nicole (an almost teenager) with her math homework for over four hours. Another highlight was visiting Sucre and spending time with one of my Spanish teachers (and now a good friend). It was lovely to meet her family and have the chance to play Catan with them. Sucre is a beautiful city but like all the cities in Bolivia, the people are even more beautiful.

Back in Oruro, the work continues to go well, at Angel Tree we have continued to deliver food, medicine, and schools supplies. However, excitingly, we have also started to have some children in the centre. It has been brilliant to spend more time with them and give them more support. One day Yesica one of the wee girls, who live halfway up a mountain, brought one of her sheep! With Onésimo we have been in the prison twice a week to work with the prisoners one to one and continue with the bible study material. Tragically the 15-year-old daughter of one of my colleagues died recently, please pray for her during this extremely difficult time.

Two weeks ago, we had a prayer week for Prison Fellowship Bolivia. It was great to spend time with and pray for the staff in the two prisons, the young offenders centre and the guys that support the young offenders. It was a bit crazy but well worth the effort.

Church is also going well, and we are pretty much at full capacity at both services which is exciting and chaotic. I have also been going to the young adult’s group at one of my colleagues’ churches. It has been nice to meet some younger Bolivians. Two weeks ago, I also went on a day trip outside the city where there was a reunion of loads of the young adult groups. It was amazing to see this aspect of the Bolivian church and play some football. A week last Sunday I also played wally (a weird Bolivian variant of volleyball) with some guys from another church. It has been great to finally play and hang out with people after such a long time.

A week last Monday I was quite emotional as it struck me that this period of my life is coming to an end and next year will be very different. It is exciting but also sad (in a good way I think) as I pray through what God wants me to do next.

• That I will listen carefully to God, as I think through next year and how I come back to Scotland

Mi tiempo en Bolivia está llegando a su fin, es por eso que a finales de octubre me tomé dos semanas de vacaciones para visitar un nuevo lugar en Bolivia, decir mi primer chao y pasar tiempo con amigos en diferentes ciudades. Uno de los mejores momentos fue la visita al hogar de niños en Santa Cruz, fue increíble ver a todos los niños, especialmente a los más pequeños. Fue cool escuchar que, con suerte, el próximo año la guardería tal vez va a reabrir sus puertas. También me sorprendí al ver que los caballos se acordaban de mí. Aunque, el mejor momento de mi día allí fue cuando le ayudé a Nicole (una niña casi adolescente) con su tarea de matemáticas por más de cuatro horas. Otro buen momento fue visitar Sucre y pasar tiempo con una de mis profesoras de español (y ahora una buena amiga). También fue muy lindo conocer a su familia y tener la oportunidad de jugar Catán con ellos. Sucre es una ciudad hermosa, pero como todas las ciudades de Bolivia, la gente es aún más especial.

Mientras en Oruro, el trabajo continúa mejorando, en Árbol de Ángel estamos entregando comida, medicinas y materiales escolares. Sin embargo, lo más emocionante es que también hemos empezado a tener algunos niños en el centro. Ha sido increíble poder pasar más tiempo con ellos y darles más apoyo en persona. ¡Un día Yesica (una niña pequeña, quien vive casi en la mitad de una montaña) trajo una de sus ovejas! 

Mientras con Onésimo estamos visitando las cárceles dos veces a la semana para trabajar con los privados de libertad y continuar con los estudios de la biblia. Hace poco, la hija de mi compañera falleció, tenía 15 años. Por favor ora por ella durante este momento tan difícil.

Hace dos semanas tuvimos una semana de oración por la Confraternidad Carcelaria de Bolivia. Fue muy bueno pasar tiempo y orando por los trabajadores de las cárceles, renacer y orientación. Fue una semana muy ocupada, pero valió la pena. 

La iglesia también va bien, y estamos casi llenos cada domingo, es emocionante pero un poco caótico. También fui al grupo de jóvenes de la iglesia de uno de mis compañeros. Ha sido agradable conocer a algunos jóvenes bolivianos. Hace dos semanas, también fui a un viaje de un día fuera de la ciudad para la reunión de muchos grupos de jóvenes. Fue increíble ver este aspecto de la iglesia boliviana y jugar fútbol. Hace dos domingos jugué wally con algunos chicos de otra iglesia. Ha sido genial tener oportunidades para jugar y pasar tiempo con otras personas después de mucho tiempo. 

En la última semana estaba un poco emocional porque me di cuenta de que este período de mi vida va a terminar pronto y el próximo año va a ser muy diferente. Estoy emocionado, pero también triste (en el buen sentido) mientras oro para saber qué es lo que Dios quiere de mí.

- Por mí, para poder despedirme bien de todos.

- Para poder escuchar atentamente a Dios mientras pienso en el próximo año y en cómo volver a Escocia.
