August 21 update from Oruro

A challenge I am dealing with currently is keeping focused on my work and life here in Oruro. As the number of months that I have left here decreases, I am finding it more and more tempting to think, plan and dream ahead. I think that part of this is that I do not feel called here (to Oruro) for the long term. However, I feel I am in the place that God wants me to be right now and want to make the most of the opportunities that I have here while coping with the difficulties. 

 

Recently I have been thinking about Esther and Daniel, how God wanted them to serve him where they were despite the incredible challenges they faced. When the Israelites were in exile, God called them to invest in their new home and serve him to the best of their abilities there. Philip has also been an encouragement to me, after he spoke to the Ethiopian God whisked him off to the next place where he wanted him to be. Therefore, it is encouraging to know that if we listen and trust in God, he will put us to the places where he wants us to be.  

 

Work has been encouraging this month. Angel Tree is back, last Friday we had a meeting with some of the mums which was cool. We are continuing with the home visits, with the hope that maybe in September or October some of the children can start to return to the centre in small groups. I would love to experience that part of the work. I also had the opportunity to lead a workshop on resilience with the team, which was fun and reminded me that I enjoy psychology and can enjoy studying. While with Onésimo we are back in the prisons and slowly getting back into the rhythm of being with the guys in there again.  

 

The church is also back in person which is brilliant, and I am enjoying working with the children. I was also quite unwell two weeks ago and it is a blessing to know that there are people who really care for me here. However, I do regret from time to time that I don’t have the same close friends here that I have in many of the other cities in Bolivia. 

 

Last week I took the opportunity to visit one of my Latin Link colleagues in Sucre before he heads back to England. Sucre is the constitutional capital of Bolivia is incredibly beautiful and chilled. It was also amazing to finally meet one of my incredible Spanish teachers in the flesh. It was really fun just to hang out and explore a new place. I am always so grateful when people take the time to see me, it is something I really value. 

 

I also wanted to say that I should be back in Scotland in January or February depending on how things go.

· That I will fully engage with all the opportunities that I have here in Oruro 

· That I continue to trust in God and plan with him 

· That the schools will go back, and the children will be able to come back to Angel Tree 

· That we will be spared the restrictions that a 4th wave could lead to 

· For the prisoners and that we will be able to build relationships with them

Enfocarme complemente en mi trabajo y vida aquí, en Oruro, me ha resultado difícil últimamente. Debido a que ahora tengo 4 meses más aquí en Oruro, me resulta más sencillo pensar en el futuro. Parte de esto es porque no siento que fue llamado para quedarme aquí para siempre. Sin embargo, también siento que estoy en el lugar en el cual Dios quiere qua esté ahora y quiero aprovechar las oportunidades que los tengo y vivir con las dificultades. 

 

Recientemente he pensado en Ester y Daniel y como Dios quería que le sirvan desde donde estaban, a pesar de los grandes retos a los que se enfrentaban. Cuando los israelitas estaban en el exilio, Dios los llamó a invertir en sus nuevos hogares y servirle en la medida de sus posibilidades. Felipe es un estímulo para mí, después de hablar con el etíope, Dios lo llevó al siguiente lugar donde quería que estuviera. Entonces me anima saber que, si escuchamos y confiamos en Dios, él va a ponernos en los lugares en los que él quiere que estemos.

 

El trabajo ha sido alentador este mes. Árbol del Ángel está trabajando otra vez, el último viernes teníamos una reunión con las madres y fue muy bueno. Estamos continuado con las visitas, con la esperanza que tal vez en septiembre o octubre algunas de los niños puedan regresar al centro en grupos pequeños. Me encantaría ser parte de ese trabajo. También tuve la oportunidad de liderar un taller sobre la resiliencia con mi equipo. Fue muy divertido y bueno para recordar que disfruto la psicología. Mientras con Onésimo estamos trabajando dentro de las cárceles y volviendo poco a poco a coger el ritmo de estar con los chicos allí dentro.  

 

Mi iglesia también es presencial otra vez y eso es genial. Me encanta trabajar con los niños allá. También hace dos semanas estaba enfermo y fue una bendición saber que tengo personas aquí que me cuidan mucho. Aunque es triste saber que no tengo tan cercanos amigos aquí como los que tengo en diferentes ciudades de Bolivia.

 

Hace dos fines de semanas tuve la oportunidad de visitar un compañero de Latin Link que vive en Sucre antes que el regrese a Inglaterra. Sucre es la capital constitucional de Bolivia y es increíblemente hermosa y tranquila. También fue increíble encontrarme con una de mis geniales profesoras de español cara a cara. Fue genial pasar tiempo con ellos y explorar un lugar nuevo. Siempre estoy muy agradecido cuando personas hacen tiempo para verme.

 

También quiero decir que debería estar en Escocia en enero o febrero. 

 

Por favor ora para:

 

• Que use todas las oportunidades que tengo aquí en Oruro 

• Que continúe confiando en Dios y planificando con él 

• Que las escuelas vuelvan a ser presenciales, y los niños podrán volver a Árbol del Ángel 

• Que no hayan restricciones que una 4ta ola podría provocar 

• Por los privados de libertad y para que podamos construir relaciones con ellos
